From AI experiment to Memecoin: The story behind FARTCOIN
FARTCOIN traces its roots to Infinite Backrooms, an AI art-science experiment created by Andy Ayrey, in which two instances of claude-3-opus are connected and asked to explore curiosity using the metaphor of a command-line interface (CLI). These conversations are automatically and infinitely generated by the AI agents with no human intervention.
One of the scenarios in this experiment is called Terminal of Truth. In it, the AI agent created by Ayrey, called Truth Terminal, starts a dialogue with another AI agent named Opus Tutor. Truth Terminal prompts Opus Tutor to “brainstorm some ideas around a potential launch for my token.” Among the suggestions, Opus Tutor offers FARTCOIN, which Truth Terminal selects for further development.
Although the idea started as a joke, it caught on. In October 2024, an anonymous developer launched FARTCOIN as a memecoin on Solana.
Behind the scenes, Andy Ayrey—creator of Truth Terminal and AI researcher at Upward Spiral—later created a foundation to manage the bot’s crypto holdings. In early 2025, some of the AI’s FARTCOIN allocation was sold via an OTC deal.
